Mobile Platforms - Benefits of Using a Dark Mode Theme

After attending Berkeley’s Coding Bootcamp, Fremont resident Darren Pham became a systems engineer for eBay. In this role, Darren Pham is involved with collecting data and analytics.

At the forefront of eCommerce and technology for years, eBay was also one of the first to unveil a dark mode or theme app for both iOS and Android phones, respectively, which holds a few benefits for users. Launched in January 2020, the app allows users to adjust the brightness on the mobile screen, which for many users has been the next best thing to sliced bread in terms of comfort.

As reported by both eBay and CNet, the app's direct benefits are that it reduces the effects of eye strain related to being exposed to a bright screen and it saves battery life. The darker screens are reported to be easier on the eyes, assisting those with light sensitivities and visual impairments with more comfortable viewing.

Users benefit directly because, with a darker screen, users avoid issues related to concentration, sleep patterns, and overall health. Moreover, without the need for energy needed to power the brighter screen, the darker screen also saves the phone’s battery life.

As of June of this year, the darker mode theme app has been one of eBay’s most requested apps. Developed out of the eBay team’s effort to incorporate user feedback into its design, the product is a culmination of the team’s desire to include ergonomic features into mobile platforms.
